Getting There & Around
By air
If you’re going to Ecuador by air, your plane will land in either one of the two main international airports. Quito flights will be welcomed at the Aeropuerto Internacional Mariscal Sucre, while other international flights will land in Aeropuerto Internacional Simon Bolivar, located in Guayaquil.
By bus
If you’re coming from Peru, traveling by bus to Ecuador is also an option. You will cross the border from Tumbes to Huaquillas. When the bus arrives at the border, you will have to get off the bus and walk across the border yourself, as Peruvian buses do not cross the Ecuadorian border. You will then have to get on another bus to continue on your way. Tourists coming from Colombia are advised against taking the bus to Ecuador, as there have been cases of kidnapping cited in the area.
Getting around
Being a small country, getting around is not very difficult in Ecuador -they have a very efficient and comprehensive bus system. Be prepared for a hot and crowded ride when taking the bus, though. Another good option is to travel around Ecuador by plane. Tame, the country’s national airline, is affordable, and has routes to almost all parts of the country. It can be quite troublesome, though, as Tame is usually delayed, and consists of old planes. Other carriers you can try are Icaro and Aerogal, but they may cost more than Tame. Flights to Galapagos can be quite exorbitant.
Car rental
Renting a car is not recommended in this small country. Roads are usually rough, and the signage system is inefficient, actually, even non-existent. If you’re traveling short distances, you would be much better off hailing a taxi. Still, if you insist on renting a car, Localiza and Budget are the reliable car rental places.
