Book cheap hotels in Cuba

Cuba is the largest Caribbean island and home to some of the best coastlines in the world. But the beauty of Cuba doesn’t stop at its beaches and bays. Away from the sand and water is a country that is vibrant and alive with the sounds of salsa and Caribbean music, the smell of rum cocktails, fresh tropical fruits and its famed cigars. It towns and cities are filled with colonial Spanish architecture, vistas, villas and plazas and classic cars the likes of which bring you to the classic age of the 50’s. In 1492 Christopher Columbus stumbled upon Cuba on his way back to Spain from his second voyage to the new worlds and made the wrong assumption that he had landed on a continent rather than an island. Yet, an island it is and due to (or thanks to) political isolation its 746 miles of land is unspoiled by tourism leaving its coastline and beaches pristine and very much a wonder to be experienced.

Getting There & Around

By Air

  • The Havana Jose Marti International Airport is Cuba’s premiere airport and is located 11 miles from Havana. Cubana is the principal national carrier of Cuba although there are some reports that say that it is one of the most unsafe airlines in the world. As an alternative other commuter airlines such as AeroCaribbean, Aerogaviota, and Aerotaxi, which when added up gives travelers a full schedule for transfer and flights in and out of Cuba.
  • There are 12 international airports in Cuba but Havana is still the principal way into the city. There are regular flights to destinations within Cuba and less, but still quite regular, international flights from and to Canada and Europe.
  • A flight from Miami would take roughly 70 minutes and is 3 hours and 30 minutes from New York to Havana, 4 hours and 30 minutes from Montreal and Toronto and finally 10 hours from London to Havana.
  • Although there are no regular flights from the US to Cuba, charter flights and tours can be booked, and since there are numerous airlines that offer these trips, competition has made for better and more affordable airfares.

By Boat

  • One must remember that if you plan on getting there by boat that everyone on board must have legal and current passports and visas. Boat owners who plan on staying must also register local authorities and give advance warning before taking their trip.

Getting Around
The best way to get around Cuba is to rent a car. Car rental costs include insurance and unlimited milage. It should be noted that agencies will start you off with a full tank of gas, that will be charged to you but will not give a refund for any fuel left in the tank. Gas stations are abundant within the city. For those thinking about public transportation there is Astro which is Cuba’s public service bus and Viazul which is Astro’s tourist line. Both charge tourists in dollars although the Astro line is slightly cheaper than the Viazul. Cuba also has its own railway, the Ferrocuba is an unlikely alternative to getting around since it is dilapidated and uncomfortable.
