Ethiopian food is based on dishes called we’t (chicken or vegetables in pepper sauce), which is served with injera (spongy bread). Other dishes include shivro and misir (chickpeas and lentils) and tibs (fried steak). When it comes to fish, you can choose from Red Sea snapper, sole, prawns, and trout. In the bigger cities, traditional restaurants will serve food around a masob , a colored basket-weave table. Eating is hands on; no use of spoons, forks or knives. In most restaurants and hotels, a 10 percent service charge is added to the bill. Tipping is a frequent custom although the amounts are small.
Ethiopian coffee is produced from the Kaffa province and is called “health of Adam”. Worth trying is talla, Ethiopian beer; kaitaka, pure grain alcohol; and tej, an alcoholic drink that’s based on honey.
