Nicaragua Culture

Nicaragua Culture is diverse, interesting, sometimes odd and inexplicable. It’s culture has been inherited by indigenous nicaragua people and also imposed by colonizers, its dances, folklore and nicaragua food teach us the way the “nicas” lived in the past, and how the new generation see the world around them. Learn the most important aspects of the diverse Nicaragua culture, from its religion to the Nicaragua education.

First off, Nicaragua is named after the “nicarao” tribe that dwelled on the shores of the greatest lake of central america “lake Nicaragua”…
…And the spanish word “agua” which means water for the great Nicaragua lake and the many lagoons and rivers boasted by the largest central american country. The current Nicaragua culture as we know it was inherited from the Spaniards that colonized most of the country back in 1522, they imposed their culture to the indigenous nicaragua people that dwelled in the country back then. One of the most popular nicaraguan dances, folklore and cultural expressions shows us what the indigenous nicaragua people thought of the spanish women when they along the conquistadores subdued the “indigenous people” in this region.

Nicaraguan Dance Of “La Gigantona” “The Giant Lady”
When the Spanish conquered central america, they brought their traditions, customs and dances. The spanish first brought this dance to represent their pride, dignity and nobility of the spanish crown. However, the indians whose land was plundered and women raped made a similar dance as a form of protest and satire against the invasive Spaniards. This dance is made by the “Giant lady” or “gigantona” which is a burlesque representation of the stature of the spanish white women imposing over the short Nicaraguan indians. The “Dwarf with the big head” or “Enano Cabezón” on the other hand, is the symbol of the dominated indigenous nicaragua people of this central america country represented in the stature of the dwarf. The big heard on the other hand means the intelligence predominant on the Nicaraguan indigenous people. Along with the Dwarf and the Giant lady, there will be a drummer enthusiastically playing the drum and “el coplero” , which is the man that will recite very unique and funny short verses.

“Some one said once: we are what we eat”, that’s because food is related to the cultural identity of a country.
