Main attractions
From Mont Fleuri Street pass the hospital and the Botanical garden bordered from Morne Seychellois and the Trois Freres the city can be seen as a live size post card. With its 20.000 population Victoria is one of the smallest capitals in the world. It’s the only city so the main commercial and communication center of Seychelles as well as the only port on the Archipelago. On the main square is placed the National house with the Government, directly on the left side is the Latanie Road directing to the New Port with its crowded international traffic. From the Latanier road begins the 5th June Avenue, the widest street in Victoria which separates the ocean from the new part of the city. Here is the tourist port with the Yacht club, the Marine charter association and the Stadium. The Borze statue of a man whose chained hand are pointing to the sky symbolizes the Liberation of the Seychellois form the Colonist – he is called Zonm lib – the free man.
In the middle of the Freedom Square is standing a large sculpture, work of the Italian artist Lorenzo Apppiani – the three birds symbolized Africa, Europe and Asia – the continents from where the roots of the Seychellois starts originally. Let from the Latanier road begins the Francis Rachel street, where is the National Library. Here is situated the elegant commercial center, where you can find banks, boutiques, shops and the offices of the flight companies. If you continue driving you are heading to the town center with its clock tower, the miniature copy of the Big Ben. From Francis Rachel street between the two notable old houses, on the Poudriere Lane is the famous hotel EQUATEAUR , the first hotel in Seychelles. On the State House Avenue ae the offices of the president of the republic and on the Independence Avenue is the Main Post office and the Nature History museum.
For change of the scenery you can walk to the old port, where is the starting point for the ferries sailing to Praslin and La Digue. Along the Revolution Avenue, which is connecting Victoria with Pass Saint Loius and Beau Vallon Bay on the other side of the island there are man small shops and travel agencies. Between Albert street, Revolution Avenue and the Market street, an artistic quarter with old houses, is situated the Market. This is the heart of the town. The stands are full with spices, tropical fruits. Particularly interesting the Market is on Saturdays, when the local farmers are selling their products and the fishermen are coming with the most fresh catch.
At the end of the street to Rue Olivier Maradan, where is standing the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
Sightseeing
- Fiennes Esplanade – located on the Francis Rachel street, where Dozen of small souvenir shops offering variety of local produces art and crafts.
- Kenwyn house – the unique shops are offering collections of fine jewel, souvenirs and paintings.
- The botanical Garden is situated on the south entrance of Victoria, in Mount Fleuri. The well maintained garden is very quiet and it takes about 2 hours to walk around it and explore the typical flora for Seychelles including some very exotic species.
- The Natural history Museum is situated on Francis Rachel Street. There are kept not only documents and hand written artifacts, but also there are regularly activities and exhibitions. One of the most spectacular items is land map hand drawn by Pedro Raniel in 1517.
Particularly the deep sea water fishing is the highlight here as the water of Seychelles is extremely reached. On the beaches of the main islands there are numerous boats for renting, and the trip can be customized according to your wishes. The prices vary between 300 euros for half day trip to 1000 euros for a full day trip as it depends on the boat type and equipment. For sailing around the coast the best is the south coast of Mahe. In April and October is taking place a Sailing competition.
Important is that not all the beaches are for swimming and bathing and you will find board with information in many languages, where there is danger. Some beaches are safe just during certain seasons. The Best Beaches are: Beau Vallon, Anse a la Mouche, Anse Intendance, Anse Royale – on Mahe. On Praslin – Anse Volbert from May to September. Anse La Source with the impressive Granite rocks. As well there are attractive beeches on the east coast of La Digue (Grand Anse, Petit Anse, Anse Cocos), which are not protected by reefs.
Seychelles are one of the best spot for diving in the world. Te best time is the month when the Monsoon changes April\May and October\November, when the sea is calm and clear. The’re diving centers in most of the bigger hotels. One dive is in the range of 35-0 euros without equipment. Ideal for snorkeling are the waters of the National Park St. Anne and Port lounay – Mahe. Cote d’Ore and Anse Lazio on Praslin. And the west coast of La Digue. Equipment is available for purchase.
Walking through the island with its ever changing landscape you can discover the diversity of flora and its uniqueness.
